HRV and Burnout Recovery: Why I'm Now HeartMath Certified
Jul 24, 2026
Why I Got Certified as a HeartMath Practitioner (and What HRV Has to Do With Burnout Recovery)
I'm Dr. Katie Barbaccia, a licensed Naturopathic Doctor based in Rochester, NY, and I recently became a certified HeartMath Practitioner.
In my own recovery, and in years of sitting across from clients, I kept noticing the same pattern. People don't actually get better until the stress response is addressed at the root, the nervous system itself.
That's the real reason I spent the last few months getting certified as a HeartMath Practitioner. Not for another credential to add to a list, but because I believe in retraining the nervous system to handle stress differently, in my own life and in the lives of the women I work with.
What Heart Rate Variability Actually Measures
HeartMath training is built around heart rate variability, or HRV, the tiny space between each heartbeat. It sounds like a small thing to measure, but it give us some valuable information.
That space between beats says more about the state of your nervous system than almost any lab value I run. A higher HRV means your body can move fluidly between stress and rest. A lower one means you're stuck in override, running on a system that never fully powers down, even when everything on paper looks fine.
This is the piece that so many women in the zone of fine are missing. Labs come back normal and the exhaustion barely improves. HRV is often the data point that can explain why. This isn't just my clinical observation. A 2023 scoping review in the journal Neuropsychobiology confirmed that HRV reliably tracks psychological stress in healthy adults, not just people managing diagnosed conditions. (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/37290411/)
Why This Mattered Enough to Get Certified
I didn't pursue this training because I was missing tools, but because I kept watching the same story play out, both with clients and in my own life. Someone does everything "right." Eats well, sleeps enough on paper, exercises, manages her calendar. And she still feels like she's running on fumes.
The missing piece was never willpower, but was a nervous system stuck in a stress response it never fully exits. HeartMath gives me a concrete, teachable way to work with that directly, through practices like Heart-Focused Breathing and Quick Coherence that help retrain how the body moves between stress and recovery.
A 2025 randomized clinical trial published in JAMA Network Open found that six weeks of this same coherence-based HRV training improved how the heart responded to mental stress, even in people with existing heart disease. (https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC12541537/)
If You're Stuck in the Zone of Fine
If you wear an Apple Watch, Oura, or Garmin, your HRV trend is probably already sitting in an app on your phone. It's worth a quick look, not to fix anything today, just to notice if there is a pattern.
A lower, flatter HRV trend over weeks or months isn't a verdict on you. It's data that serves as a piece of the puzzle alongside how you actually feel day to day.
How This Fits Into My Practice
I am excited to be offering a deeper layer inside the nervous system work that's always been part of how I practice. HeartMath strategies sit at the center of Pillar 1 of the Energy Reclamation Method, the 24-week program I'm building for women recovering from burnout.
HeartMath won't be the only tool we use. It's one piece of a larger approach that also looks at digestive health and hormone balance, because burnout rarely lives in just one system of the body. It's a piece I now have a formal, structured way to teach.
More on that program is coming this fall. In the meantime, if you want to learn more about HeartMath, my practitioner profile is here: https://certified.heartmath.com/user/katie-barbaccia/
